Growing in the Lord

sermon on Growing in the Lord

Hebrews 5:12-14

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

A little boy attended a class party on his very last day of class one.

His teacher was saying goodbye to the children as they were going out the door the little boy stopped and said, “Teacher, I want to stay in class one with you.”

“That’s sweet of you, ” the teacher said. “But you’ll have new teacher next term.”

“Yes, I know,” the boy said. “Then I wish you had also been promoted to come and teach me in class two!”

God wants to promote us to a higher level in life but very often we get comfortable at the lower level.

For instance, in the spiritual life, we often get stuck in class one.

We find comfort in the elementary principles of faith and never really move on to the deeper things.

God wants us to grow deeper in our understanding of the word, have deeper trust in Him, and make big sacrifices for His Kingdom.

He wants us to rise up and do something extraordinary for His glory.

Maybe you have been living at the ordinary level all your life.

God is calling you to the next level this year.

He is promoting you to a higher level.

So set bigger goals and make greater commitment to sacrifice for the Kingdom of God.
